How Much Is That Doggy In the Window!

I am a Dachshund fanatic! I LOVE them! Especially females -- especially the runt -- especially the black/tan coloring -- especially the minis.

I have had 4 Doxies during my lifetime. As a child that was the only pet I ever wanted. You see, my next door neighbor had a black/red male, and I thought he was the greatest dog. I suppose that is why I am particular to the black/red coloring. I never had one as a child - my Mom would not allow a dog in her house. When I was 21 and in college, I borrowed money from my uncle to purchase my first Dachshund -- Prissy. She was the sweetest girl!

Prissy died in my arms when I was 8 months pregnant with my son. It goes without saying that I was devastated. One week before my son was born, my husband surprised me with a 6-week old black/red female puppy - Gretchen (he says there's nothing worse than a depressed pregnant woman). Gretchie filled a huge void in my heart. She was my special little girl. When my son was between 1 and 2 years old, we found a chocolate/red female puppy - Nestle. She had the most loving disposition. She was my little chocolate drop. In 1998 we added to our Doxie family with Pepper - a black/red silver dapple female. She has the most sensitive personality I have ever witnessed in a dog. She's my little speckly girl.

Nestle passed away in 2006 at the age of 15; Gretchie passed away in 2007 at the age of 18; Pepper is 11 now.

I tell you all of this to get to this -- there has been a long period of time when I have not been the least bit interested in adding to my Doxie family. Pepper is so very attached to me. You see, when Gretchie died I started letting her go practically everywhere with me. She had never been in the house alone - there had always been another dog home with her - I felt horrible leaving her alone.

Well .... last night a couple (acquaintances from the past) showed up at our front door while I was not home. You will never guess what they had - a black/red mini female Dachshund that is 6 months old (sure am glad I wasn't home). Why did they bring her you ask? They are looking for a good home for her and "just happened" to think of me. They've had her since she was 9 weeks old. Here's the story I got:

A young couple in their 20's got her when she was 6 weeks old. After 2 weeks they determined they did not want the hassles and responsibilities of a dog. This couple has had her since she was 9 weeks old. Their children are grown and out on their own, and they are beginning to miss being able to "pick up and go any time" they want. They say she is very loving and is a total lap dog.

Now .... those of you who have pets know how confining they can be to your lifestyle. Well .... you know what's going on now! They are going to bring her to the house tomorrow at 2pm. I want to see how she will interact with each of us and, most importantly, Pepper. I don't know if we will add to our Doxie family or not. Only time and circumstances will tell.

Stay tuned!
